Premier League clubs are concerned about political interference in Manchester City's appeal after Prime Minister Andy Burnham's comments on the importance of Abu Dhabi investors, with opposition demanding reports on meetings.

Several clubs in the Premier League have voiced serious concerns about potential political interference in Manchester City's appeal process following striking remarks from Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The government leader publicly admitted he would be "extremely worried" about the potential departure of the Abu Dhabi owners of the Manchester club, sparking outrage among football officials across the country.

According to BBC Sport, representatives from the elite division fear that state economic interests could overshadow sporting regulations and disrupt a fair punishment for the 114 financial violations that City is appealing.

A high-ranking source from one Premier League club commented:

Everyone would have a certainty of concern. We understand the investments they’ve made in our country... but this is different; this is sport, this is our national game.

Another club representative was even more scathing in their critique of the Prime Minister's comments:

At best, these comments are naive; at worst, they are quite manipulative, and it does not reflect well on the situation.

Further fuelling the fire, Burnham drew a direct parallel with Everton's points deduction case, emphasising that he still considers the treatment of the Liverpool club "unjust".

Downing Street was forced to quickly quell the growing scandal. The Prime Minister's office clarified the official position, stressing that no one is "above the rules", and amended the phrasing in the official statement from the cautious "if violations are proven" to the uncompromising "wherever they may be found".

Nevertheless, the political crisis surrounding the case is intensifying: Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has officially called for the government to disclose comprehensive information about all meetings between Burnham and Manchester City representatives.
