Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is adamant that Manchester City should face significant penalties for their alleged financial misconduct.
In a recent episode of the Overlap Daily podcast, Gerrard argued that merely demoting the club to a lower division or stripping them of titles wouldn't suffice. He believes that City could bounce back swiftly to the top tier, undermining the integrity of the competition in lower leagues.
The ex-footballer suggested that penalties should include long-term transfer bans and regular points deductions. Such measures, he claims, would act as a deterrent for other clubs and safeguard the reputation of the Premier League.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Gerrard recalled the 2013/2014 season when Liverpool missed out on the title after his infamous slip against Chelsea, allowing Manchester City to claim the crown. Despite the bitter memory, he confessed he doesn't covet a retrospectively awarded medal and has resigned himself to never having won the league during his career, holding no grudges about that season's conclusion.
Gerrard emphasised the need for a swift resolution to this high-profile case, asserting that financial regulations should be enforced evenly across the board.
