Ronald Araujo has quickly captured the hearts of Liverpool fans. Jamie Carragher believes the Barcelona loanee is already becoming a cult figure at Anfield, while the Merseysiders could trigger a €55 million buy option next summer.
The Uruguayan joined Liverpool on loan until the end of the season after losing his place in the Barcelona lineup under Hans Flick. The deal includes an option for a permanent transfer valued at €55 million.
In his initial matches, manager Andoni Iraola has deployed Araujo in various roles, including right-back, a position that has posed challenges since Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure.
Carragher commented:
Liverpool had issues at right-back, which is why they brought him in. Araujo was not just signed as a central defender; it was expected he could also play on the right.
It seems that in just two matches, he has become something of a cult hero. The fans have taken to him immediately.
Sometimes this happens with players. He arrived with his own story, and perhaps Barcelona were glad to let him go, but the Liverpool supporters welcomed him with open arms. It looks like he’s happy here.
According to Carragher, Araujo's relationship with the fans is influenced not only by his performances but also by his openness. He has previously spoken publicly about mental health issues.
However, a decision on a permanent transfer has yet to be made. Reports from TEAMtalk indicate that Liverpool are in no rush and plan to discuss Araujo's future with the player at the beginning of 2027.
A key factor will be the defender’s desire to stay. The club understands that the €55 million option is only sensible if Araujo himself wishes to remain at Anfield.
Despite his loss of form at Barcelona, the 27-year-old has not ruled out a future with the Catalan club. In January 2025, Araujo signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract with Barcelona, but last season he started just 11 matches in La Liga.
Sources indicate that before his exit, Araujo spoke with Hans Flick and received permission to explore other options. Clubs from Saudi Arabia showed interest, but ultimately, Araujo chose the loan move to Liverpool.
