Peter Schmeichel has tipped Emiliano Martinez to be the standout transfer of the season in the Premier League, with the former Manchester United goalkeeper notably impressed by Chelsea's acquisition cost of just £7.5 million from Aston Villa.
Prior to Martinez's arrival, it was anticipated that Robert Sanchez would remain as Chelsea's first-choice keeper. However, following the World Cup winner’s transfer, Sanchez has moved on loan to Como for the remainder of the season.
In an interview with Viaplay, Schmeichel remarked:
I have to say, the amounts being thrown around in the transfer market these days are just bonkers. I honestly don't understand how clubs can sustain such levels of spending.
Looking at the list of the most noteworthy transfers this summer, I don’t see one name on it - Emiliano Martinez. In my opinion, he could very well turn out to be the best signing this season.
He cost them only £7.5 million. This is a top-class goalkeeper. Just £7.5 million.
If we're trying to get our heads around what's going on in the transfer market, this deal exemplifies the whole situation perfectly. I think it's been the craziest transfer window yet.
