Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has shared his outlook on the team's prospects under Michael Carrick during the new Premier League season on The Overlap.
After taking charge in January following Ruben Amorim's departure, Carrick made a significant impact and guided the team to a commendable third-place finish. However, Scholes believes it is too soon to expect United to challenge Arsenal for the title, particularly after their impressive campaign as defending champions.
Scholes' analysis of the squad and key concerns
- Central midfield: Scholes feels the team lacks the necessary athleticism and pace in the middle. While Youri Tielemans has a great touch, he doesn’t offer the dynamism needed, and the potential of Andre Santos has yet to be fully realised.
- Defensive line: Concerns arise from the frequent injuries to Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez. Youngsters Leni Yoro and Aiden Haven have shown promise but still lack the consistency required at the highest level.
- Attacking front: The attacking line has become significantly more threatening, but Schesko still requires an experienced partner or backup to help share the load.
Scholes stated:
Michael Carrick is calm and composed; he doesn’t get carried away by emotions. I believe he can win the Premier League with Manchester United, but not this season. His biggest challenge will now be managing the fixture congestion from mid-week Champions League matches, which wasn’t a factor last spring.
In the opening round of the 2026/27 Premier League, Manchester United will face Hull City, while Arsenal begins their title defence against Coventry City.
