The Overlap expert and former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has cast doubt on Manchester United's summer transfer strategy.
Carragher believes that Michael Carrick's side made a mistake by missing out on 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who has joined Tottenham from West Ham for a record-breaking £85 million.
In contrast, the Red Devils bolstered their midfield with 29-year-old Youri Tielemans moving from Aston Villa for £35 million, alongside Andre Santos from Chelsea for £50 million.
Jamie Carragher stated:
I was a bit alarmed when I saw the links between Man Utd and Fernandes, as he could have been an excellent signing. The club hinted that £85 million was too steep, but is it really overpriced for a top midfielder at his age? You can't pick up a super player for £50 million anymore.
As for Tielemans, he's a decent player, don't get me wrong. However, it feels as though this transfer happened the wrong way around: he should have been at Man Utd for the last three years and then moved to Aston Villa, rather than the other way around.
