Paul Scholes believes Benjamin Sesko should be in the starting lineup for Manchester United in Sunday's derby against Manchester City. The former midfielder is not convinced that Matheus Cunha is suited for the central striker role.
Sesko has missed all of pre-season due to shin issues and has yet to start a match this term. In previous fixtures against Hull City, Ipswich, and Everton, Michael Carrick opted for Cunha as his frontman, with the Slovenian only making late appearances.
In his last outing, Sesko came off the bench and netted with a header from a Luke Shaw cross in the dying moments, propelling United briefly ahead. Sadly for the Red Devils, Ainsley Maitland-Niles equalised in stoppage time, sealing a 2-2 draw.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes shared his thoughts:
Against Everton, the team looked very timid. There was a serious lack of aggression, despite the fact that they could have overcome this opponent. There was so much space available, but United didn’t attempt to take advantage.
The central striker position is a concern because Sesko isn’t playing. He can become a focal point for the whole attack. It's really hard to watch Manchester United without a proper central striker.
As for Cunha, we're still unsure of what he is — a number ten or a wide player. But he is definitely not a nine, and it's tough watching United without a genuine centre forward.
