Newcastle's Nico Gonzalez isn't letting the 1-4 defeat by Coventry get to him. After the sixth round of Premier League action, the Spanish midfielder reflected on his team's missed opportunities to change the outcome and acknowledged the need to address several shortcomings.
Coventry executed a solid game plan, with Jack Rudoni opening the scoring from the penalty spot. After the break, Sidiki Sherif doubled their lead. Sven Botman pulled one back for the Magpies in the 70th minute, but late goals from Ellis Simms and Steven Mfueni sealed the victory for the hosts.
Despite the heavy loss, Gonzalez is confident that the squad had chances to achieve a better result.
“We had good opportunities to equalise. We have made improvements, but there are things we need to work on,” he told Sky Sports in a post-match interview.
Gonzalez noted that in the Premier League, late match scenarios often prove decisive. When a team is pushing forward and conceding, maintaining defensive solidity becomes increasingly challenging.
“It’s normal in this league to see goals scored in the dying minutes. Everyone is going forward, and defending as well as you do at the start becomes hard,” he explained.
“The final score doesn’t truly reflect what happened on the pitch. I’ve watched many matches where a team has equalised from 2-1 down,” he added.
While the 22-year-old admitted that Newcastle needs to improve, he emphasised they are aware of their problems.
“I’m not worried. We did a lot of things right. It’s clear we need to get better. It’ll be easier to work on this because we know what we need to do. If we fix those issues, I'm sure we'll have a great season,” said Gonzalez.
This defeat is a significant blow for Matthias Jaisle's side, especially after conceding four goals and failing to capitalise on Botman's effort. Now, the team must analyse their mistakes and strive to return to winning ways in the upcoming matches.
