Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has opened up about his role in team training. The former midfielder admitted he has no desire to participate in drills alongside the players and has long moved on from his playing days.

In his own words, Carrick said:

Do I want to get back out on the pitch? No. I really don’t miss playing and I have no particular urge to join in training. There have been times when I've done it, but now I hardly ever do.

It's been a long time. In the first year or two after retiring, you might feel like you can do that, but eventually, you have to move on and understand your role.

According to Carrick, constantly reminding the current players of his playing experience wouldn't do much good:

The lads don’t need me hanging around, trying to get involved and saying: 'This is how we did it back in the day, guys.'

I don’t think that approach works. I understand my role perfectly now. It’s entirely different, and I’m completely comfortable with that.

Last weekend, Manchester United secured their first victory of the new season, thrashing Ipswich 5-2. Carrick's side will take to the pitch again on Sunday for an away match against Everton.
