Arsenal legend Martin Keown criticises Xabi Alonso for selecting Morgan Rogers as a 'false nine' against Tottenham (0-2) instead of a proper striker.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has made his discontent known regarding Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso's tactical approach after the Blues suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. The choice to use Morgan Rogers in a 'false nine' role in lieu of a more seasoned striker has drawn significant criticism from Keown.

On Saturday, Spurs capitalised on their rare visit to West London, netting two goals in the second half courtesy of an own goal from the Chelsea goalkeeper following a corner, and a solo effort from Matheus Tel. Matters worsened for the hosts when Cole Palmer was sent off.

Alonso's alterations were forced due to Joao Pedro sustaining an injury in training the day prior. However, Keown voiced his bewilderment over the decision to field Rogers in such a crucial role during an appearance on Match of the Day:

It looked odd, it looked odd. I can't recall Morgan Rogers ever playing as a striker at Aston Villa, and I didn't think he was particularly good today.

Keown was equally puzzled by the absence of the experienced Danny Welbeck from the starting lineup, who was only brought on late in the game when the team was already in need of a comeback.
