Michael Carrick's future at Manchester United is in jeopardy following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. Candidates for his replacement include Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, with Howe's appointment potentially costing £3 million.

The future of Michael Carrick at Manchester United is hanging by a thread. The club's hierarchy held urgent discussions following a dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth and are weighing up options for a managerial change. One candidate under consideration is former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

Man United discuss Carrick's future

According to The Telegraph, football director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada met on Monday to discuss the current predicament with club co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who participated via video link.

No decision has been made regarding Carrick's dismissal just yet. The hierarchy aims to evaluate all potential scenarios before settling on their next course of action. Carrick himself hopes to lead the team in training on Tuesday unless informed otherwise.

The loss against Bournemouth marked United's sixth in their last 12 matches, leaving them just a point above the relegation zone. The upcoming fixtures are poised to increase the pressure on the coaching staff.

Howe's appointment to cost £3 million

Eddie Howe remains a viable option for Manchester United, having departed Newcastle in July. Reports suggest that conditions surrounding his exit include a compensation package should he be appointed by a rival club.

Initially, the cost was around £6 million but it has reportedly dropped to approximately £3 million. Howe, who managed Newcastle for four and a half years, led the team to victory in the EFL Cup in 2025, ending a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

However, it’s worth noting that Howe had intended to take an extended break from management due to physical and emotional exhaustion, coupled with the aftereffects of a previous bout of pneumonia.

Nagelsmann another contender

Julian Nagelsmann, former head coach of Bayern Munich, is also on the shortlist of potential successors to Carrick. Other names in the frame include Unai Emery of Aston Villa, Brighton's Fabian Huerzeler, and Antonio Conte, who left Napoli in June.

Nonetheless, securing Emery or Huerzeler could prove both complicated and costly. Therefore, Manchester United must assess not just the sporting credentials of these candidates, but also the financial ramifications of any potential appointments.

Fernandes conflict adds to pressure

Carrick's situation is further complicated by his relationship with team captain Bruno Fernandes. The coach opted to leave the Portuguese midfielder on the bench during the Bournemouth match, refusing to bring him on. This decision followed Fernandes' public criticism of the coach's tactical choices after a 4-1 defeat to Como.

Adding to the tension, defender Lisandro Martinez has publicly expressed discontent with the club's transfer strategy, resulting in fines and public apologies.

Next up for Manchester United is a tricky away fixture against Chelsea on Saturday, followed by important matches against Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa.
