Manchester City are showing serious interest in Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister as they continue their protracted negotiations with Chelsea over Enzo Fernandez.
Following the appointment of Enzo Maresca as head coach, the squad has undergone a significant overhaul. City have parted ways with a number of experienced players, including Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Tijjani Reinders, Kalvin Phillips, and John Stones. In a bid to refresh their team, they've brought in new names such as Ayub Boadi, Elliot Anderson, Mathis De Turbe, Geronimo Rulli, and Jeremy Monga. The Premier League season kicked off for the Manchester side with a determined 2-1 victory over Bournemouth, thanks to late goals from Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol.
Despite the influx of new talent, City's hierarchy are keen to secure an experienced leader in midfield before the transfer window closes.
The primary target remains Argentine Enzo Fernandez, whom Maresca is eager to reunite with in Manchester. According to The Guardian, City are still looking to finalise a deal with Chelsea, despite the initial deadlines passing. The lack of decisive progress in talks has prompted the reigning champions to consider alternative options.
Insider Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Manchester City have already explored the possibility of acquiring 27-year-old Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. However, persuading the Merseysiders to part with one of their key midfield players will be a tough ask; Liverpool are not inclined to strengthen a direct rival even for a hefty fee.
Additionally, City are also eyeing Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo due to their attacking losses of Savinho and Omar Marmush, yet the Reds currently have no intention of letting the Dutch striker go either.
