Chelsea forward Joao Pedro has faced heavy criticism from Brighton supporters and former players for his behaviour during the exciting 4-3 Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.
The Brazilian winger, who netted in his side's opening game against Fulham, started against his former club. From the get-go, the visiting Brighton fans were in full voice, jeering Pedro, especially after he squandered a golden opportunity to score, firing well wide from mere yards out.
However, Pedro quickly redeemed himself, finishing off a brilliant Chelsea counter-attack to score the third goal, and he made headlines by celebrating right in front of the outraged Brighton supporters. Prior to his goal, the forward had also taunted the fans by showing them the ongoing score using his fingers.
This behaviour drew sharp criticism from former Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert, who took to social media to voice his disapproval:
Don’t forget what Brighton did for you, mate. Ungrateful.
In response to the backlash, Pedro defended his actions in an interview with BBC Sport:
I was just celebrating. It could've been any fans, any team in their place. I wanted to enjoy my celebration. We started well, but then let in some unnecessary goals. We need to be more stable and not give our opponents energy. Emi (Emiliano Martinez) showed his class again. Step by step we will find our peak form. It was critical to take the three points today. I know Brighton well, I understood how to punish them on the counter, and today I showcased my speed. We are incredibly strong in attack, with quality players in every position. We need to build on our confidence and unity.
Experts praise Pedro's performance
Despite the off-field drama, Pedro's performance thrilled football analysts. With 4 points from his first two games of the season (2 goals and 2 assists), he received high praise from Sky Sports expert Darren Bent:
What a finish. Morgan Rogers started the move centrally, and then Yorrel Hato made an excellent run. Pedro's first touch took the ball away to set himself up for the shot, and his second was a clinical finish past the goalkeeper. Joao Pedro was the undisputed man of the match by a country mile.
