Chelsea have advanced to the fourth round of the EFL Cup after a dramatic and sensational comeback victory against Leeds United. The match at Stamford Bridge ended with a score of 6-3.
The first half was firmly dominated by the visitors. In the 23rd minute, Tariq Muharemiovic opened the scoring with a well-placed header from a Harry Wilson corner. The side managed by Xabi Alonso appeared lacklustre, failing to create any significant chances.
As the second half got underway, Leeds shocked the home crowd with a second goal—Brenden Aaronson found the back of the net in the 48th minute after a brilliant run from Ethan Ampadu. However, a quadruple substitution made by Alonso at halftime, bringing on Pedri Neto, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Reece James, completely changed the course of the game.
Just five minutes later, in the 53rd minute, Palmer converted a penalty, and two minutes afterwards, he levelled the scores following an assist from Rogers. By the 60th minute, Neto had put Chelsea ahead 3-2, and just five minutes on, Danny Welbeck cleverly navigated past three defenders to score again, making it 4-2.
Leeds weren't done yet. On 75 minutes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back for them, closing the gap. But the finale belonged to the London side; Valetin Barco added a fifth in the 80th minute, before Welbeck capped off the night with a second goal in stoppage time, sealing the 6-3 victory.
Despite receiving a yellow card for his passionate response, Xabi Alonso can take pride in his team's remarkable comeback. This win allows Chelsea to continue their pursuit of silverware.
