Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has urged the club to enhance their defensive lineup before the transfer window closes, stressing the importance of signing two new players.
The start to the 2026/27 season has been a mixed bag for the Red Devils. Following a disappointing 0-2 defeat to Hull City, they bounced back with a commanding 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town, with captain Bruno Fernandes shining brightly by netting his third career hat-trick and providing an assist. However, Neville highlighted significant concerns over the team's defensive frailties.
Neville pointed out that while the potential signing of defensive midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton would bolster the central area, it won't resolve all the structural issues at the back:
"It’s already apparent that Manchester United's back four is incredibly vulnerable. This is the same defensive line that conceded 50 goals in the last two seasons. The situation won't improve unless the players perform better or the midfielders offer more robust protection. They've already conceded four goals in just two matches, which is a worrying sign. If Michael Carrick can secure one or two defenders in the next 48 hours, it would be absolutely crucial. The arrival of a central defender and a full-back would significantly alter the team's dynamics."
Among the potential candidates to bolster United's defence are Lewis Hall from Newcastle, Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Achempon, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton.
Neville also praised the performance of captain Bruno Fernandes, who was awarded the PFA Player of the Year:
"He is undoubtedly the best signing since Sir Alex Ferguson left, by a country mile. He possesses character, bravery, and belief that can carry Manchester United through tough times, not to mention his impressive goal and assist tally. His relentless desire to influence the game and deliver vital passes makes him an exceptional player. Without him, the club would face huge difficulties."
Looking ahead, Carrick's team faces tough away fixtures, starting with a match against Everton at Hill Dickinson, followed by a Manchester derby against Manchester City.
