Manchester City manager Enzo Mareska has emphasised the unique significance of the forthcoming derby against Manchester United.
The Italian tactician stressed that the key for his team at Old Trafford is to stick to their own style of football:
This match is very important for various reasons. We know the significance of the derby, especially here. It’s a special game. The most important thing we can do is try to be ourselves, and then we will see what the final result is.
Mareska was also asked about the comments made by City's new signing Elliott Anderson, who described the club as the "kings" of Manchester:
Elliott said that because he grew up during the time when Manchester City was incredibly strong. So, it’s perfectly natural for him to say that. If you look further back in time, it paints a different picture. I think that’s why he said it.
The Italian does not see the two extra days City have had to prepare for the derby compared to United as a serious advantage:
Last season, it happened to us when we played Napoli, and then two days later, we faced Arsenal. Sometimes this occurs. I have no doubts that United will be ready. You just have to adapt.
It happened to us last season, now it’s them, and next season it will happen to someone else.
Mareska also spoke about Phil Foden, agreeing that the City academy graduate may have a unique motivation when it comes to facing Manchester United:
Probably, yes. He’s one of our own; a product of the academy. His feelings about this match are different from those of the other players. It’s normal. For him, it’s a different game.
