Xabi Alonso has announced that Emi Martinez is gradually recovering from a jaw fracture and may return sooner than expected. Malo Gusto is available for the match against Tottenham, while Pep Chavarria will miss the London derby due to injury.

Xabi Alonso has reported positive news regarding Emi Martinez, who is on the mend following a jaw fracture. According to the manager, the goalkeeper is gradually improving and could potentially be back on the pitch sooner than initially expected.

The upcoming clash with Tottenham will take place at Stamford Bridge, but unfortunately, Martinez won’t be in contention. The keeper sustained a serious injury in a collision with Everton's defender Jarrad Branthwaite during last week's match.

After the collision, the goalkeeper had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher and was taken to hospital, where he underwent successful surgery. Initially, it was thought that his recovery would take between four to six weeks.

Alonso updates on Martinez's recovery

“He’s getting better. He underwent surgery, and he’s feeling better every day. We still need to wait a few weeks. I hope the timeline is closer to the minimum rather than the maximum,” stated Alonso.

The manager also stressed the importance of medical staff closely monitoring the recovery process.

“We need to listen to the doctors as well. Considering how serious the injury was, it’s encouraging that he’s improving,” he added.

As of now, the exact timeframe for Martinez's return remains undetermined. Until he is back, young Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders is expected to continue between the sticks.

Gusto ready to play, Chavarria misses derby

Alonso also shared updates on the status of his full-backs. Malo Gusto has been cleared to rejoin the squad ahead of the Tottenham clash after missing the last match due to illness.

Conversely, Pep Chavarria will miss the derby. The defender traveled with the team for the game against Everton but was ruled out shortly before kick-off due to a minor injury. Jorrell Hato stepped in and played a crucial role in Pedro Neto's first goal.

“Malo is fit. Pep is still doing extra training, but he won’t be ready for the match,” Alonso explained.
