15-Second Brief
Coventry thrashed Newcastle 4-1, claiming their first home win in the Premier League for 25 years. Frank Lampard's team climbed to 14th place, escaping the relegation zone.

Coventry secured an impressive 4-1 victory over Newcastle in the sixth round of the English Premier League.

Frank Lampard's side celebrated their first home triumph in the top division in a quarter-century, climbing out of the relegation zone.

Rudoni opened the scoring from the spot

The home team started confidently, and only six minutes in, Newcastle's goalkeeper Lukas Gornicek fouled Sidiki Sheriff in the box. Jack Rudoni converted the penalty, marking Coventry's first home goal of the season.

The last time the club scored at home in the Premier League was in April 2001 when John Hartson secured a narrow 1-0 win against Sunderland.

After conceding, Newcastle attempted to regain control, but Coventry defender Bobby Thomas made crucial interventions, helping his team maintain their lead until halftime.

Sheriff doubles the lead, Botman provides a glimmer of hope

Just after the restart, Coventry extended their lead with a second goal. In the 48th minute, 18-year-old Sidiki Sheriff calmly finished off a well-worked move, solidifying the home side's advantage.

Newcastle pressed for a goal and created a few promising chances, but it wasn’t until the 70th minute that they found the net. Sven Botman unleashed a powerful long-range strike to pull one back, briefly reigniting hopes for the visitors.

However, the Magpies couldn't build on that momentum. In the 81st minute, substitute Ellis Simms struck with a well-placed shot after play resumed following a foul involving Joao Linton and Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Stephen Mfunyi capped off the scoring in the 86th minute. The 18-year-old burst into the box and curled a stunning effort into the top right corner of the net.

Coventry leave the relegation zone

This victory marked Coventry's second consecutive win in the league. After a challenging start to the season in which they struggled to score, the team has picked up momentum and climbed to 14th place, now level on points with Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Newcastle, managed by Matthias Jaissle, remains in 11th position with eight points from six games. The team has mustered defensive issues and has been wasteful in attack.

It's now crucial for the Magpies to rectify these problems ahead of their next match against Aston Villa on Saturday.
