Traditionally, Champions League matches take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but this season's opening round is an exception, with six fixtures scheduled for Thursday.
The shift comes as UEFA has decided to allocate each European competition its own distinct start week. In this first week, only Champions League matches will be played, while the Europa League and Conference League sit this one out.
After the first matchday, the Champions League will revert to its traditional schedule, with fixtures resuming on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from the second round onwards.
The Europa League will also have its own dedicated week, with matches set for Wednesday, September 16, and Thursday, September 17. Post this, the tournament will return to its usual Thursday evenings.
Among the clubs participating in today’s Champions League lineup is Manchester United, who will host Azerbaijan’s Sabah at Old Trafford. Bayern Munich will be facing Bodo/Glimt at home, while tournament debutants Como will take on RB Leipzig.
For some fans, the early kick-offs starting at 19:45 Moscow time will also feel unusual. UEFA has been employing earlier start times for club matches in European competitions since 2021, aiming to broaden its international television audience.
