Max Eberl, Bayern Munich's sporting director, has confirmed that the club looked into the possibility of bringing Bradley Barcola to Bavaria last summer. However, the price for the French winger was simply too high for the German champions.
Ultimately, Barcola left Paris Saint-Germain for Liverpool, making a stunning £123 million move. Eberl mentioned that he has known the player for quite some time, having attempted to secure him during his time at RB Leipzig.
In an interview with Sport Bild, Eberl elaborated:
Honestly, I have known Bradley since my time at Leipzig. I wanted to bring him there.
We had meetings and discussed a potential transfer, which developed a closer relationship with him. That’s why we have always maintained an interest. Of course, we also considered him at Bayern.
However, Bayern were not in a position to compete with the financial figures mentioned for Barcola.
Eberl explained:
When you hear figures like that, it becomes too much for us. In the case of Luis Diaz, we made a decision that required significant expenditure, but it was on a completely different scale compared to Bradley.
Eberl also confirmed that Bayern had an eye on Anthony Gordon, who subsequently made a £69 million switch from Newcastle to Barcelona:
It’s no secret that we were interested in Anthony Gordon for our left flank. We ultimately decided against this move as we found him too expensive.
