Alan Shearer returns with his predictions for the latest round of action in the English Premier League. The focus is on the Manchester derby, as well as crucial matches involving Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool.
The former England striker shared his insights on the upcoming football weekend in an interview with Metro.
Manchester derby
Manchester United host Manchester City in a clash that promises excitement. City, under Enzo Maresca, have made a perfect start with three wins from three, while Michael Carrick's men have had a slower beginning.
It isn't ideal that the Manchester clubs played in Europe on Thursday and Tuesday respectively, but you can't use that as an excuse. They fought hard last season to secure a Champions League spot. United always give their all in big matches. We’ve seen how sloppy they can be defensively against Hull City and Everton, but they always seem to turn it on in these types of games. I'm predicting a draw.
Chelsea vs Hull City
Chelsea will be eager to get back to winning ways at Stamford Bridge.
If anyone had said at the start of the season that Hull City would be the only team yet to concede a goal in the league, we'd have all laughed. Full credit to them—they've been exceptional. But that streak will come to an end this weekend. The Blues will win, potentially scoring three or four goals. They are fantastic in attack, although there are defensive concerns for Xabi Alonso. Few can match their attacking trio, and while the visitors might cause some nerves, Chelsea will come out on top.
Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest
Aston Villa also had a slow start last year, failing to win any of their first five matches. There’s no panic in their camp now, and there shouldn't be.
I’d favour them to win against Nottingham Forest. They secured a vital victory in Europe, kicking off their Champions League campaign with an away win. The Forest need a win as well; they looked strong against Liverpool. Still, the Birmingham side will take all three points at home.
Liverpool vs Fulham
Having produced a solid result in European competition, Liverpool are now set for league action.
Liverpool must win, and I believe they will. They've got defensive issues again, but at Anfield, they should have enough strength to secure a victory. It's crucial that Alexander Isak maintains his form; he needs it after last season for himself and the club. Alvaro Arbeloa urgently needs to win with Fulham, or the consequences will be clear.
Sunderland vs Arsenal
Mikel Arteta's side has started their title defence brilliantly.
Arsenal are very solid and strong across every position. Sunderland picked up a point against Brentford, but the Gunners will prove too tough to handle. They will continue their strong start and claim a comfortable victory.
Bournemouth vs Brentford
Bournemouth should have been leading by three or four goals against Newcastle United in the first half of the last round. The main concern is that after an hour of intense pressing, they tend to fade and concede late goals. Their game against Brentford should be competitive, so a draw is on the cards.
Crystal Palace vs Ipswich Town
Crystal Palace managed an important win in the previous round, and they must build on that success against Ipswich Town. At home, they should be looking for all three points.
Coventry City impressed in their last match and should earn their first point when they face Brighton. It’s likely to end in a draw.
Leeds United vs Newcastle
Elland Road is always buzzing with atmosphere, but Newcastle United should extend their good run and secure an away win against Leeds United.
