Alan Shearer believes that only Manchester City and Chelsea can mount a serious challenge to Arsenal in the title race. He particularly highlighted Enzo Maresca's team as the primary competitors to the reigning champions.
Arsenal have started the Premier League in formidable fashion, winning all three of their opening matches. In their latest outing, Mikel Arteta's side pulled off a come-from-behind victory against Chelsea at the Emirates, triumphing 2-1.
Speaking on the podcast The Rest is Football, Shearer shared his thoughts:
They have been really impressive. I was especially taken by their reaction after conceding a goal.
At the start of the season, we all said Arsenal would be champions, and what I’ve seen so far only strengthens that view. Arsenal are magnificent.
They boast a brilliant defence. The defenders receive considerable support from those playing further up the pitch, but as a unit, the team is incredibly solid.
Even if the midfield is bypassed, they meet a back four that coordinates superbly and stays compact, with a fantastic goalkeeper behind them.
This is probably the best defence in world football right now. It provides a superb foundation for the team.
When asked who Arsenal's main rivals in the title race might be, Shearer responded:
Chelsea and Manchester City. If I had to pick one, I’d probably go with Manchester City.
Manchester United aren't good enough defensively to be in contention with the teams we've mentioned.
Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards echoed Shearer's sentiments, ranking Maresca's team above Chelsea when it comes to challenging Arsenal:
I’d choose Manchester City simply because they are likely better defensively. They have played together as a unit longer than Chelsea.
Chelsea may be more exciting to watch, but they allow opponents to create too many chances and concede too many goals. If they really want to challenge for the title, they need to improve their defensive game.
Chris Sutton went even further on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating he currently sees no team capable of stopping Arsenal:
This side is a well-oiled machine. Chelsea are a good team, but Arsenal always find a way to win. Can anyone stop Arsenal? I don’t think any of the other Premier League teams can.
