Enzo Fernandez has confirmed his decision to leave Chelsea ahead of his transfer to Manchester City. BBC reports indicate that the Argentine midfielder's wish to change clubs became apparent following Enzo Maresca's departure back in January.
BBC journalist Nizaar Kinsella revealed that after Chelsea's elimination from the Champions League, Fernandez openly admitted uncertainty about his future with the team for the upcoming season. His top choice was Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants never made a formal offer, viewing the midfielder's price tag as inflated.
New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso personally spoke with Fernandez over the summer, trying to persuade him to remain at Stamford Bridge, but the player had already set his sights on departing. During a pre-season friendly against Real Sociedad, he was jeered by his own supporters, and subsequently missed out on matches against Luton and Brighton.
The deal with Manchester City was finalised just hours before the transfer window closed. Chelsea had initially valued Fernandez at £120 million, setting a deadline of August 14 for offers. However, they later increased their asking price to £135 million.
City chose not to meet this demand, offering £125 million instead. Chelsea eventually accepted, gaining £5 million more than their original assessment of the player.
This summer, Chelsea has reportedly generated over £425 million from player sales, with additional income from loans potentially pushing the total to £500 million.
