Honest Ahanor finds himself at the centre of an unusual transfer arrangement: in a single day, he has been presented by two Premier League clubs. Chelsea has agreed to acquire him, but the defender will play for Crystal Palace in the 2026/27 season.
BBC journalist Nizaar Kinsella explains that this scheme is tied to Premier League regulations. Clubs are only permitted to loan one player to another league participant each season, and Chelsea has already sent Axel Disasi to Crystal Palace for £3 million.
As a result, Ahanor's transfer to Chelsea will only be made official in 2027. Until then, his rights will remain with Atalanta, who have sent him on loan to Crystal Palace. This way, the restriction on loans between two English clubs is not violated.
The deal comes on the heels of Chelsea's recent acquisition of centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million just a month ago.
Kinsella notes that Chelsea has previously exploited unconventional avenues within the existing regulations. While some of these rules have changed over time, the London club continues to seek new ways to acquire and develop promising young talents.
