Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has urged fans to generate an electric atmosphere at Stamford Bridge ahead of the London derby against Tottenham. This encounter marks the first meeting between the two sides since the Spanish manager's appointment last summer.
Currently, Chelsea sit seven points ahead of Tottenham and hold a 12th position higher in the league table. The Blues head into this derby after securing back-to-back victories against Bournemouth with a resounding 5-1 win, followed by a 2-0 triumph over Everton. These positive results have come on the back of an improved performance level from the team after a rocky start to the season.
“We expect a fantastic atmosphere, an electric energy, and tremendous support. We know the passion will be palpable in the stadium, and we must harness it correctly. In matches like these, such energy is crucial. We don’t need extra motivation; it naturally arises from the derby’s history. This is a match of the highest level,” stated Alonso.
Mike Mendez set for first Premier League start
Goalkeeper Mike Mendez is set to make his first start in the Premier League. He came on as a substitute in the last round following Emiliano Martinez’s injury and became the youngest goalkeeper to play for Chelsea in the Premier League.
Martinez recently underwent surgery due to a fractured jaw, leaving Mendez to kick off the derby in the starting XI.
“We are counting on strong support from the fans for both Mike and the team. It’s crucial that we connect with the supporters during both the highs and lows. For me, it’s vital that we play our game, and that the players give their all.
When the stands truly live the match alongside the team, that’s one of the best aspects of the Premier League. Fans are not just passive observers – they become part of the action. This energy emerges naturally and gives the team an immense boost,” the Chelsea boss added.
