Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana has given an insightful interview where he reflects on the frequent changes in management at the club, addresses criticisms aimed at him, and shares his expectations for the upcoming season under Xabi Alonso.
On frequent managerial changes and support for Xabi Alonso
Since joining Chelsea in August 2022 for £69.5 million, the 25-year-old has witnessed seven different managers at the helm. Fofana is candid about how these constant upheavals have negatively impacted the squad:
I think everyone realises we need stability. Last season, we discussed this with the hierarchy, and they agreed. The owners see it the same way we do as players.
Of course, we need results because if you’re losing every match, something has to change. But stability is crucial, and I believe Xabi Alonso is an excellent choice for that.
We had a fantastic relationship with Enzo Maresca as we had time to work with him, to understand his requirements. I think it’ll be similar with Xabi. We need to learn from him as a coach and a person. Over time, we can build something incredible.
On the pressure of his price tag and finding scapegoats
The French defender shared his thoughts on the constant scrutiny he faces and the label of being the 'fall guy' for the team's struggles:
Honestly, the people within the club know my mentality. This happens in football. When a team loses, especially when playing poorly, people need someone to point at: ‘Oh, it’s all his fault!’. I can accept that and remain calm — the club paid a lot for me.
I came here with ambitions to be the best in my position and help the team. So, when things don’t go to plan, I’m ready to take the blame. If I’m sitting on the bench laughing and someone makes a story out of it, that’s not a problem for me. The key is that the club and my teammates know my commitment.
On the pitch or on the bench, I always want to win and give my all in every match. I signed for a huge fee four years ago. At first, it was tough to grasp, but after four years, I fully understand it all.
On season goals and focus on the Premier League
Fofana is convinced that the absence of European football this season could play to Chelsea’s advantage in the title race:
I believe a defender can’t shine if the whole team is playing poorly — it depends on the collective, it’s not the same as being a striker or a number ten. But when I’m fit, I show my level and help the team win and fight for trophies.
This season, without the Champions League or any European competitions, it’s fantastic that we can fully focus on the Premier League. We have a strong squad, an excellent new manager, and a very talented staff. We have everything needed to compete for top positions. If I’m in shape, I can help.
