Aston Villa manager Unai Emery expressed his satisfaction with his team's first home victory of the season.
In a Champions League clash, the Birmingham side thrashed Fenerbahce 6-0, but the Spanish tactician emphasised that the scoreline didn’t reflect the challenges his players faced.
Despite leading by three goals at half-time, Emery was not satisfied with his team's control of the game. He noted that Fenerbahce were able to create dangerous opportunities, hitting the woodwork and having chances to score, while goalkeeper Zion Suzuki had an outstanding match.
“I’m very happy with the first home win. It was necessary for us. Even with a 3-0 lead at half-time, I wasn’t fully satisfied, as I felt the same in the previous game. They didn’t score, but Zion played fantastically; the opponent hit the bar and didn’t make the most of their opportunities. We wanted to control the game better,” Emery stated at the press conference.
After the break, Aston Villa adjusted their tactics and managed to extend their lead by another three goals. The manager highlighted that his team accomplished the tasks set for them and improved their grip on the match.
“In the second half, we planned to rectify the situation, and I think we managed to do that. Then we wanted to stop the opponent, and we managed to score another three goals,” the Spaniard added.
Emery also acknowledged that Fenerbahce didn't deserve to lose by such a large margin. For Aston Villa, this victory held special significance; the team finally secured a win at Villa Park this season, providing a much-needed boost as they look to continue their Champions League campaign.
