Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has sharply criticised Bruno Fernandes' leadership qualities, urging the Portuguese midfielder and his teammates to display more responsibility on the pitch.
Keane questions Fernandes' leadership
“I see fans at matches singing songs about Bruno. I look at those guys and think: 'You lot are delusional!'” Keane declared.
The ex-midfielder emphasised that at the highest level of football, it’s not enough to solely rely on technical skills. He believes players need to actively engage in defence, press opponents effectively, and avoid giving the impression of effort without real action.
“Bruno is a talented player, but talent alone isn’t enough. He has far more talent than I could ever dream of having. But if you think talent is all that’s needed at a big club…” the former United captain stated.
“Leadership is about action”
Keane also elaborated on what he considers to be the hallmark of a true leader. According to him, a captain should set an example through their actions and support the team during difficult moments.
“For me, leadership is about action. It’s about responsibility. When players step onto the pitch, they need to show more courage, want the ball, and press opponents correctly,” the pundit added.
Fernandes has frequently been one of the key figures for Manchester United, but Keane's comments reflect a broader discussion about the expectations placed on the captain of an English club.
