Tottenhams manager Roberto De Zerbi reflected on the 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the eighth round of the Premier League.
The Italian coach noted that the team has significantly improved both their performance and the dynamics among the players.
“This was an important moment for the fans, the club, and the players themselves. They deserved this win and prepared magnificently for it. We are making significant strides in terms of mentality, team unity, and our relationships on and off the pitch,” De Zerbi told Sky Sports.
“In matches against Aston Villa and Everton, we played very well for 30 minutes. Perhaps we lacked goals and quality in the final third, but after facing our first bit of adversity, we sometimes changed our mindset. Now it’s a proper team. The players are performing better, and our style of play is evolving,” he added.
The atmosphere in the dressing room is more important than tactics
De Zerbi highlighted that the changes are evident beyond just footballing aspects. The time spent together helps players understand each other better and strengthens team spirit.
“When we have dinner together and spend time in the dressing room, I see a different group, a different relationship, and a completely new atmosphere among the players,” he said.
“Today, the team showed great character. We have many new players, and those who were here last season and the year before went through tough times, finishing 17th twice. We are working to change that part of the club's history,” De Zerbi stressed.
“We’re lucky because there are many wonderful people and excellent players in the dressing room. I believe that through hard work, we can achieve something significant,” the Italian concluded.
De Zerbi also spoke about the importance of their training camp in Marbella, where the team could openly discuss issues and build mutual trust.
“I must believe in this group. I have never lost faith in my players. The week in Marbella helped us communicate face-to-face, open up to each other, and stop hiding our feelings. This is crucial for team spirit and confidence. The atmosphere within the dressing room is perhaps even more important than tactics,” he remarked.
De Zerbi speaks on James Maddison
He also took the time to comment on midfielder James Maddison, emphasising his importance to the squad.
“Anyone who loves football loves James Maddison. He’s a special player. I told him in the dressing room, ‘James, tell me about your issues, because we need you’.”
“Conor Gallagher performed well when he came on. We have a lot of excellent players. It all depends on Maddison’s physical condition. He’s an incredible player,” De Zerbi added.
