Former Chelsea captain John Terry has not held back in his criticism of manager Xabi Alonso after the Blues’ lacklustre 0-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Terry feels Alonso made poor decisions regarding the starting lineup and the tactical approach to the match.
“Alonso should have done better with the selection and the tactics. He was weak today,” Terry stated.
Terry draws comparisons between defeats to Arsenal and Tottenham
The former defender acknowledged that since Alonso's arrival, the team had shown promise and frequently found the back of the net, but struggled to breach a Spurs side that had previously been vulnerable defensively.
“When he came in, everything was looking good: the team was playing well and scoring lots of goals. But we just couldn’t score against Tottenham, who hadn’t kept a clean sheet before today,” Terry explained.
He went on to compare the defeat against Tottenham with the previous loss to Arsenal, stating that the latter was more understandable.
“When we lost to Arsenal, it made sense because the match was a decent contest. Chelsea dominated and scored a goal. But today’s game was just dreadful to watch,” added the former Chelsea captain.
Chelsea’s derby clash against Tottenham ended in a 0-2 defeat, with Mike Penders inadvertently scoring an own goal in the 77th minute, followed by Matthias Tel doubling the visitors' lead in the 87th minute. Adding to their woes, Cole Palmer received a red card in the 80th minute.
