Moisés Caicedo has called on Chelsea to learn from their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, stating that the team must keep their concentration throughout the game to prevent expensive mistakes.
On Saturday at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea suffered their first home loss of the season, with an own goal by Mike Penders and a late strike from Matis Tel securing the win for Spurs. The Blues had previously enjoyed back-to-back Premier League victories against Bournemouth and Everton, but they were unable to carry that momentum into the match against their London rivals.
In the first half, the hosts created several chances, with Cole Palmer, Jordan Henderson, Morgan Rogers, and Pedro Neto testing keeper Antony Kinski. However, the scores remained level until the second half, when Tottenham capitalised on a corner, forcing Penders to slice the ball into his own net. Tel later confirmed the scoreline, while Chelsea finished the match with ten men after Palmer was sent off.
Caicedo, who captained the side for the second consecutive match, acknowledged the need for the team to enhance their concentration and defensive resilience:
We need to stay focused for the entire match because if you switch off for even a second, you get punished. We must learn from this so we can prevent it from happening again and keep our goal intact throughout the game. It was a tough defeat, but we have to keep pushing forward; there are many matches ahead, and we want to perform better.
The Ecuadorian midfielder also stressed that Chelsea is determined to fight for the top positions in the Premier League table:
Everyone knows we need to improve. We will analyse this game because we need to be at the top of the table. We will learn from it and we will definitely be there at the end of the season.
This was Caicedo's third consecutive start after recovering from injury. He put in a strong individual performance in midfield, making the most interceptions (four) and two recoveries. Reflecting on his form, the 24-year-old added:
I tried my best to help the team, and I'm feeling better with each match. It was a tough game, but I want to keep performing well and improving where it’s needed because I want to support the team at any moment.
