Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has boldly drawn a parallel between the Gunners' emerging talent Max Douman and Spanish phenomenon Lamine Yamal. The Basque midfielder noted that both teenagers possess unique mental resilience and a fearless attitude towards authority.
When discussing the similarities in playing style between the two talents, Merino stated:
Yes, I would say there are definitely similarities between Max and Lamine's characters. They couldn't care less about the spotlight. They flourish when the pressure is at its highest. They are always ready to take on any challenge and remain completely unfazed even in front of the biggest names in world football, so in that regard, they're quite alike.
However, the Spanish midfielder emphasised that the dressing room keeps the young Englishman grounded and doesn’t let him get ahead of himself:
Of course, everyone wants Max to shine, to unleash his tremendous potential to the world. But at the same time, he occasionally needs reminding that he’s just an ordinary person and part of a larger team. The main advantage of players like Lamine and Max is that despite their unique gifts, they remain incredibly humble. They are eager to learn and listen to the veterans in the team. That is an invaluable trait. We're happy to have Max with us, but he understands that we are here to support him. Even if sometimes we can be a bit hard on him and push him, he knows it's all for his benefit. He’s a great lad.
