Lisandro Martinez had a cheeky verbal exchange with Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards following Manchester United's 4-0 victory over Sabah in the Champions League.
The defender, who netted the final goal of the match, appeared on CBS Sports after the game. When asked who his favourite pundit was among Thierry Henry, Carragher, and Richards, the Argentine pointed towards Henry.
Richards quickly chimed in:
What about us defenders?
With a smile, Martinez replied:
I like to watch quality footballers.
When the focus turned to Carragher, the joke continued:
As a player? Let's just call him a good guy.
Carragher took a moment to reflect on his own comments made when Martinez first joined Manchester United. The former Liverpool defender had doubted whether the Argentine could succeed in English football due to his height.
He admitted:
Lisandro, when you first came to Manchester United, I said you were too small to make it in the Premier League. Now you're here four or five years later, and you've completely proved me wrong. You could say you've changed my mind over time.
Martinez responded thoughtfully:
It's all good. Sometimes, you have to hear comments like that from you. You need to take it with a pinch of salt. If I keep thinking about it, I'll start playing badly. I just try to stay focused and give my all for this club, which has trusted me from day one.
Martinez is gradually making his return to full match fitness after a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered last season. In the match against Sabah, the 28-year-old defender scored and helped Michael Carrick’s side secure a significant victory, marking their first clean sheet of the season.
