Sky Sports football expert Jamie Carragher hailed Manchester United's stunning 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town as a long-awaited return to the club's illustrious historical traditions. The hero of the match was captain Bruno Fernandes, who netted a hat-trick to secure the team’s first win of the 2026/27 season.
The hosts quickly found themselves on the back foot at Old Trafford after a well-placed shot from Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead, but Fernandes restored parity before half-time. In the second half, Ruben Amorim's side took complete control, unleashing a devastating spell that saw four goals hit the back of the net in just 16 minutes, including an own goal from Jacob Greaves and two clinical strikes from Fernandes, one being a penalty.

Watching Manchester United yesterday, I felt it was a genuine return of the old Manchester United. When this club operates at its peak, it’s always incredibly quick and energetic. The events unfold without pause, one wave of attack rolls over another. Every club has its own DNA and approach. Manchester City might play more calculated and under strict control, but the essence of Manchester United is total attack at full speed. It was filled with crazy energy; they literally swept Ipswich off the pitch.
Commenting on discussions surrounding the urgent need for a new central defender before the transfer window closes, Carragher urged the coaching staff to give existing players the opportunity to progress:
In terms of numbers, they definitely have a full complement in defence. Additionally, there are a couple of young defenders who need a real chance to grow this season and prove if they can play at this level. If there’s someone on the market who is head and shoulders above the current players—then yes, it’s worth buying. But they certainly have enough personnel in those positions.
