Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that the punishment for Manchester City’s financial misconduct should span several years.
Recently, an independent commission found the club guilty of 115 breaches of financial regulations. According to Sky Sports News, Carragher is adamant that the sanctions must be as severe as possible.
"Now that we know they are guilty, yes, there is an appeal, but since they've received this significant initial guilty verdict, I don’t think anyone wants to wait. It needs to be dealt with this season because it has to impact Manchester City next season. I know the word 'farce' is being thrown around; it almost turns this season's Premier League title race into a farce if Manchester City continues to play and potentially wins, given what we know. So this has to happen this season, and I think whatever punishment is decided cannot be just a one-season slap on the wrist because this has been going on for years. Therefore, I believe the sanctions should last for years and years."
As reported by journalist Kaveh Solhekol, the other 19 Premier League clubs are pressing for a swift resolution to the matter. The teams want an immediate implementation of any decision made.
City’s rivals feel that mere point deductions or relegation for one season wouldn’t suffice for a club that has breached regulations for such an extended period. Hence, they believe the verdict must serve as a strong precedent.
