Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has expressed his desire to see Erling Haaland at Anfield, should Manchester City face serious ramifications from their financial breaches.
An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 out of 115 charges relating to their financial operations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. While the club is contesting this decision, the final punishment has yet to be determined.
In light of this situation, Aldridge suggested that if significant sanctions are imposed, agents of City players may start scouting for new clubs for their clients.
Aldridge stated:
Agents of all the City players are probably rubbing their hands together right now. If the club does indeed get relegated, Haaland will not want to be playing in the lower divisions.
Will all these world-class footballers want to drop down with the team? Or will they head to Barca, Real Madrid, or PSG, earning the same money at another big club?
That’s what the agents will be telling them because they earn more on transfers than on new contracts. So if the situation arises, agents will be keen.
Aldridge specifically highlighted Haaland, deeming him the most attractive player from City on the market:
If they have to sell players, Haaland would be my first pick. I would love to see him at Liverpool. Everyone will want him.
They have a lot of brilliant players. If it comes to that, many strong players will be looking to secure transfers. But for now, we just have to wait and see how the situation unfolds.
If Haaland were to make a hypothetical switch to Liverpool, he would be in competition with forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike. However, there are currently no negotiations between the Merseysiders and the Norwegian superstar; Aldridge merely shared his wish.
The scenario is particularly intriguing given Manchester City's massive summer spending spree, with the club splurging around £460 million to bolster their squad, including signings like Enzo Fernandez, Elliot Anderson, and Ayoub Bouaddi.
As it stands, it’s premature to discuss the potential exit of Haaland or any other stars, as City has filed an appeal, and the nature and scale of any sanctions remain undetermined.
