Tony Adams revealed he was ready to leave Arsenal in 1996 after being approached by Alex Ferguson. However, the arrival of Arsene Wenger and a substantial pay rise led him to stay in London.

Tony Adams has opened up about a dramatic crossroads in his career back in 1996 when he contemplated leaving Arsenal following a phone call from Manchester United's Alex Ferguson. At the time, Adams was discontent with the club's direction and made it clear to the board that he was willing to depart, but an unexpected turn of events soon saw him stay put.

Arsenal was navigating through a rough patch during this period. George Graham’s sacking in 1995 due to a payments scandal left the club in turmoil, and things didn’t improve under Bruce Rioch, who managed a disappointing fifth-place finish in the league the following season.

Rioch himself left the club just before the start of the 1996/97 season, which prompted Ferguson to make his move for one of Arsenal's most iconic figures.

Reflecting on his conversation with club chairman Peter Hill-Wood, Adams recalled:

I went to see Peter Hill-Wood and asked, ‘What are the club’s ambitions?’

He replied, ‘Don’t worry, Tony, we’re getting a good manager, everything will be alright.’

But by this time, Adams had already received a direct approach from Ferguson.

Adams recounted the phone call:

Fergie rang me and said, ‘Come here. You’ve got no manager, it’s complete chaos over there.’

I told Peter, ‘Listen, I’m leaving.’

In a dramatic twist, Arsenal managed to convince their captain to stay, offering him a treble of his salary. Shortly after, Arsene Wenger took the helm at the club.

Adams added:

They tripled my wages, Arsene came in, and the rest is history — I stayed. I’m so grateful things turned out the way they did, and I didn’t leave. I got to win even more trophies with Arsenal, including a couple of doubles, and I finished my career having spent it all at one club. I really take pride in that.

Ultimately, Adams indeed spent his entire professional career at Arsenal, becoming a legendary figure for the club during his time.
