15-Second Brief
Gary Neville criticised Chelsea's discipline after their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham and called on Xabi Alonso to restore order. Cole Palmer received his first career red card following a mass scuffle.

Gary Neville has sharply criticised the discipline of Chelsea players following their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, urging head coach Xabi Alonso to impose strict control after a chaotic London derby at Stamford Bridge.

The former Manchester United defender expressed disbelief at referee Chris Kavanagh's decision to show only a yellow card to Morgan Rogers for a reckless challenge on Conor Gallagher, rather than sending him off. He also noted that Cole Palmer was very close to a straight red prior to his dismissal.

Tempers flared in the second half as Chelsea attempted to hold back Tottenham, leading to a mass confrontation involving 14 players sparked by an incident between Palmer and Mateus Fernandes. Rogers received a warning in stoppage time for a late tackle on Gallagher, but Neville deemed this punishment insufficient. Speaking on Sky Sports, he insisted:

I think that’s a red. Absolutely. He went in on him with no intention of playing the ball. It’s madness from Rogers.

Neville went on to express his frustrations towards the Chelsea bench:

They’ve lost control. Xabi Alonso needs to get them sorted.

Palmer was sent off in the 80th minute, receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge on Gallagher. His first booking came after an altercation with Fernandes as the latter attempted to get back on his feet. Fernandes himself earned a yellow card for handball while Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven was cautioned for a foul on Moises Caicedo.

Neville also condemned Palmer's behaviour:

Palmer's reaction was foolish. He was asking for trouble. It’s completely unclear why he did that. I think it could easily have been a red card. Fernandes was on the ground and couldn’t defend himself. Very silly action.

Post-match, Xabi Alonso acknowledged that Chelsea need to improve their emotional control and confirmed he intends to have a word with Palmer about the sending off:

Yes, we need to work on that and improve. We spoke about these things yesterday, and the first yellow can be decisive, as we saw today. It’s about growing as a team and as individuals. We hadn’t had any red cards before this match and must continue that way to gain maturity during tough moments. I need to review the incident and speak to Cole, but it’s definitely a lesson for the future.

For Palmer, this dismissal marked the first red card of his career and, according to Alonso, was also Chelsea's first sending off in all competitions this season. The England midfielder will serve a one-match ban, missing the League Cup away fixture against Liverpool at Anfield, but he is set to return for the following Premier League clash against Manchester United.
