Former Manchester United forward Dwight York has raised eyebrows over the management of Benjamin Shezko under Michael Carrick. The £74 million signing from RB Leipzig has not yet cemented his place as a starter in the squad.
Carrick's team has struggled at the beginning of the Premier League season, managing just one win out of six matches. Last weekend, at Old Trafford, United failed to capitalise on a numerical advantage against Tottenham, settling for a 1-1 draw after Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring and Dominic Solanke equalised in added time.
Currently, Shezko is recovering from a shin injury that may require surgery. However, York insists that, once fit, the Slovenian forward should step into the role as United’s primary striker. He shared his thoughts in an interview with talkSPORT.
“When you look at the attacking players, it raises a big question for Carrick. I don’t understand why Shezko isn’t playing. Yes, he’s injured right now, but you need to trust the guy to play as the number nine. He has all the qualities needed,” said York.
“Manchester United has always had a wealth of attacking talent, and we've traditionally thrived on our forward line. Sure, defenders play their part as well, and we've had some amazing ones in the past.”
Tomorrow, United face a challenging away fixture against Atletico Madrid in the European competitions. The medical team will assess Shezko's condition before a decision is made regarding any potential operation.
