Chelsea have come up with an innovative way to finalise the transfer of highly-rated Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor. The deal allows the player to go out on loan to Crystal Palace straight away.

This news has raised eyebrows among supporters, especially considering that Crystal Palace had already secured Axel Disasi on loan from Chelsea this summer. Premier League regulations strictly prohibit clubs from borrowing more than one player from any single English side.
There were concerns that Palace might have to cancel Disasi's loan, but fans can breathe a sigh of relief as this won’t be the case. Disasi will continue to don the Eagles’ colours alongside the 18-year-old newcomer.
The key to this transfer lies in its unique structure. Crystal Palace will be taking Ahanor on loan directly from Atalanta, meaning that for the 2026/27 season, this temporary move is entirely separate from Chelsea.
The agreement for Chelsea to buy the talented youngster for £40 million will not come into effect until the summer of 2027, yet Atalanta have already handed the Blues full control over the player's future.
In due course, Ahanor is set to join a squad that already features left-footed central defenders Yorrall Hato and Levi Colwill. The coaching staff are also counting on the development of Josh Achiampong and other academy graduates.
