Chelsea have suffered a significant blow with captain Reece James set to miss approximately three months following a 'minor' knee operation.
The 27-year-old defender now faces a challenging spell on the sidelines, which had been foreshadowed by his absence during the recent match against Bournemouth due to an unspecified injury. If the three-month medical prognosis holds true, James will miss at least 15 guaranteed fixtures for the Blues.
Here’s a breakdown of the matches where the captain will definitely be unavailable, with 14 of these fixtures falling within the Premier League:
- 17 October – Everton (away)
- 24 October – Tottenham (home)
- 28 October – Liverpool (away) – fourth round of the League Cup
- 31 October – Manchester United (home)
- 8 November – Sunderland (away)
- 21 November – Leeds United (home)
- 27 November – Nottingham Forest (away)
- 2 December – Crystal Palace (home)
- 5 December – Liverpool (home)
- 12 December – Manchester City (away)
- 18 December – Aston Villa (home)
- 27 December – Coventry City (away)
- 30 December – Ipswich Town (away)

* Match dates may be adjusted by broadcasters.
In addition to these fixtures, Reece James will also miss the third round of the FA Cup scheduled for the weekend of 9 January. Should Chelsea progress further in the League Cup, he would also be absent from the quarter-finals and the first leg of the semi-finals. This could mean that the total number of matches missed across all competitions may rise to as many as 18.
Circling the calendar, 16 January 2027 marks the day Chelsea are set to host Sunderland, which is currently viewed as the target date for the captain's return to action.
Despite the surgery being labelled as minor by the club’s medical team, this stint on the sidelines will be the second most prolonged injury absence of James's career. His only longer setback came in December 2023, when a serious operation on the back of his thigh ruled him out for nearly five months.
