Manchester United claimed their first victory of the Premier League season by thumping Ipswich 5-2 at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes delivered a sensational hat-trick, inspiring Michael Carrick's team to an impressive comeback after a disappointing start against Hull.
The match began with a few nervy moments for United. Julien Ennis and Daizen Maeda tested goalkeeper Senne Lammens, forcing him into some fine saves, before Abdul Fatawu outpaced Luke Shaw and set up Leif Davis, who scored with a clean strike to put Ipswich in front.
As the tension mounted in the stands — especially following the previous home defeat to Hull — the tide of the match shifted due to a mistake by Marcelino Nunez. Matheus Cunha seized the opportunity, stealing the ball and feeding Fernandes, who thundered in a shot with his left foot to level the score.
Controversial second goal for Manchester United
At the start of the second half, Brian Mbeumo almost put United ahead but struck the crossbar from close range.
United soon did find the net again, although this goal sparked debate. Harry Maguire appeared to escape sanction for handling the ball in the box.
Had the ball gone straight into the net, it would have been ruled out. However, following a deflection off Jacob Greaves, the ball crossed the goal line, resulting in an own goal credited to the Ipswich defender.
Fernandes completes his hat-trick
United quickly seized the initiative thereafter. Jacob Greaves brought down Matheus Cunha as he raced towards goal, leading the referee to award a penalty.
Bruno Fernandes, who had missed two penalties during pre-season, was spot on this time, converting to make it 3-1.
Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, netting the team’s fourth goal.
But he wasn't done yet. The Portuguese midfielder delivered a brilliant pass to send Mbeumo in behind the defence, allowing him to chip the goalkeeper and extend the lead to 5-1.
In stoppage time, Ipswich added a consolation goal through substitute Chuba Akpom, but it was too late to affect the outcome of the match.
Optimism returns to Old Trafford
The starting XI featured academy graduates Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford, with Rashford making his first start for the club since 2024.
Although Carrick’s side is still a work in progress, the final whistle at Old Trafford brought a wave of optimism among the fans.
