Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas has reflected on his side's narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the third round of the Premier League.
Despite the loss, Thomas believes the team put in a commendable performance against one of the strongest clubs in the league.
‘It was a positive display. We’ve had a tough start, but our real season began today. The way we set up and played was a good starting point,’ Thomas told Premier League Productions.
The defender noted that Coventry aimed to play defensively, aiming to limit spaces for their opponents while looking to exploit counter-attacks.
‘We knew creating chances would be difficult. We came here to cause them problems and hit them on the break. We managed to do that but didn’t take our chances. On another day, it could have been different,’ Thomas stated.
He also acknowledged the strength of Manchester City, particularly their ability to find space between the lines.
‘They have a lot of players operating between the lines, they’re an excellent team. You have to respect your opponent. We did that and defended well. We managed to restrict their opportunities quite considerably,’ he added.
Thomas believes that Coventry should not shy away from facing such opponents and must use these matches as a platform to showcase their talents.
‘We can’t come here thinking we’re playing against someone special and that we don’t belong. We fully deserve to be here and should grasp such opportunities with both hands. Today, we put in a good performance,’ he concluded.
