The UK tax authority (HMRC) has filed a court claim to declare Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool defender and now TV pundit, bankrupt. The total amount of debt is estimated to be between £700,000 and £800,000.
Representatives for Carragher have stated that this is a private tax dispute, insisting that the issue is being resolved and will be settled shortly.
The debt may be linked to an old scandal involving film partnerships established by Ingenious Media. In the 2000s, Carragher was part of the Ingenious Film Partners structure that financed films in an effort to reduce tax liabilities. Later, UK authorities deemed such schemes as artificial, demanding the return of millions saved through these methods.
Other Premier League stars, including Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, and David Beckham, also found themselves ensnared in similar situations. However, the official link between Carragher's current bankruptcy claim and these investments has not been confirmed.
