Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has raised concerns about the lack of a dominant holding midfielder at Anfield as the side continues to evolve under Andoni Iraola. While the Reds have made a promising start to the season and Bradley Barcola's recent form looks encouraging, Gerrard can't shake off his worry over the defensive frailties that have surfaced.
Liverpool have suffered just one defeat in 12 matches across all competitions this season. The club made significant signings over the summer, including Victor Munoz and the highly-rated Barcola.
However, questions remain despite the positive results. In their last five outings, the Merseysiders have managed to keep a clean sheet only once, raising eyebrows regarding their defensive solidity.
Gerrard is optimistic about Liverpool's attacking prowess, especially if Alexander Isak can steer clear of injury troubles.
The former midfielder stated:
This team needs a healthy Isak who can play regularly and handle a busy schedule because he knows how to score in the Premier League.
Gerrard impressed by Barcola's progress
Gerrard also took time to praise Barcola, who has steadily found his footing since joining Liverpool.
The Frenchman arrived at the club having missed much pre-season action, but his recent performances have shown Gerrard just how much quality he possesses.
He noted:
Barcola looks incredibly quick. It's clear now that he's found his match fitness after getting some games under his belt.
He has been fantastic over the last ten days or so. Everything seems to be coming together, and we are seeing just what kind of player Liverpool have signed.
Yet, Gerrard believes an attacking boost alone won't solve all the team’s problems.
Liverpool need a new Fabinho
The primary concern for Gerrard is how easily opposing teams have been able to breach Liverpool's midfield.
While he commended the current midfield ranks, he sees a critical gap that needs addressing.
He expressed:
Alexis Mac Allister is back in great form, Ryan Gravenberch has returned to the squad, and when you add Dominik Szoboszlai into the mix, it creates a strong midfield when everyone is fit and ready to go.
Still, even with such talent, Gerrard perceives a deficiency at the heart of the midfield.
The former skipper elaborated:
I still think Liverpool lack a true powerhouse in the centre. Perhaps Iraola and some fans will disagree with me.
They need someone who can dominate the midfield and prevent opponents from cutting through with ease. Someone along the lines of Fabinho or Dietmar Hamann.
According to Gerrard, that type of player could provide the stability the team desperately needs.
Despite their solid results, Liverpool must find a balance between their attacking style and defensive reliability. Should Andoni Iraola manage to crack this conundrum, the Reds can fully exploit the potential of their revamped squad.
