Paul Scholes is adamant that Bruno Fernandes has lost the right to wear the captain's armband for Manchester United after he publicly questioned Michael Carrick's tactical decisions. Scholes suggested that perhaps Fernandes should contemplate a move away from European football, possibly to Saudi Arabia.
This controversy erupted after Fernandes voiced his concerns following United's 4-1 humiliation at the hands of Como in the Champions League, where he doubted the coaching staff's decision not to implement a personal pressing strategy.
Scholes labels captain's remarks as unforgivable
When discussing Carrick's tactical choices, Fernandes stated, "That should be assessed by the coach and his staff, not by me." His comments inevitably led to his exclusion from the squad for the subsequent match against Bournemouth. Scholes did not hold back in his criticism during a recent episode of The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.
"What Bruno Fernandes said last week is, in my view, unforgivable. How can you trust him with the captain's armband at any team he plays for? I think he should leave European football and consider a move to Saudi Arabia," Scholes asserted.
Batt believes Fernandes has tarnished his own reputation
Former United midfielder Nicky Butt also weighed in against the captain, claiming that Fernandes jeopardised his legacy at the club with just one interview, despite his contributions on the pitch and leadership qualities.
Fernandes remains one of the team's most productive players since joining from Sporting in 2020, yet his form has dipped this season. After a record-breaking 21 assists in the Premier League last term, he has managed just a solitary assist so far.
Carrick given chance to rectify the situation
In light of Manchester United's disappointing results, the club confirmed that Carrick will have the opportunity to turn things around. Currently languishing in 16th place in the Premier League, the team is just one point above the relegation zone.
The Red Devils will face Chelsea in their next match, with Carrick in urgent need of a victory to break a streak of poor performances that began after their win over Ipswich at the end of August.
