Liverpool’s sporting director Julian Ward has a hefty task on his hands. He has inherited an unbalanced squad where almost every position requires attention and astute decision-making.
At the back, the defence looks vulnerable. In central defence, only young talents Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacque have long-term contracts. On the right, Jeremy Frimpong is struggling, while Conor Bradley has been sidelined through injury since January. Up front, there’s an overload of left wingers but a dire shortage of options on the right flank.
The midfield is particularly concerning. Last summer, the Reds sold Curtis Jones without finding a suitable replacement. Thus, it is abundantly clear that addressing the central midfield is now a top priority for the club in the transfer market.
Liverpool simply must secure a new contract for Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine has previously voiced his displeasure over not being offered a deal while Dominic Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secured lucrative long-term contracts instead.
However, the situation has fundamentally changed. Mac Allister has unequivocally established himself as the best midfielder in the squad and a cornerstone of Andoni Iraola’s tactics. He excels in any role on the pitch.
Retaining the player should be Ward’s priority, even taking precedence over negotiations with the veteran Virgil van Dijk. Securing a new contract with Mac Allister is a crucial and logical step towards ensuring the team’s stability.
