15-Second Brief
Manchester United have hit a deadlock in contract negotiations with 32-year-old Bruno Fernandes, reports Ben Jacobs. The club holds an extension option until 2028 and is preparing a succession plan for their leader.

Negotiations between Manchester United and team captain Bruno Fernandes for a new contract have hit a deadlock. Insider Ben Jacobs reports that, while the club sincerely wishes to retain the 32-year-old Portuguese at Old Trafford, the two parties have yet to agree on terms for a decisive breakthrough.

Fernandes' current deal runs until the summer of 2027, with an option for an additional year that can be activated by the club. Presently, United are weighing up three potential scenarios: allowing his contract to expire, activating the extension option, or eventually coming to terms on a new agreement. It is important to note that there’s no talk of a disaster or inevitable farewell; the two sides simply haven't hammered out the final details.

The situation surrounding Fernandes is reminiscent of past contract negotiations involving Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah at Liverpool. The club recognizes the fundamental importance of the veteran to their project but, given his age, must simultaneously prepare a succession plan. Manchester United wants to keep Bruno for a few more productive seasons while also grooming a younger talent with a similar skill set, ensuring a smooth transition without losing quality on the pitch.

The Red Devils already boast several versatile attacking players capable of playing in the number ten role, such as Mason Mount, Mateus Cunha, and Brian Mbemo. However, these players often fill positions on the wings and as strikers. The hierarchy are hoping to either promote a successor from their current squad or sign a promising young midfielder for the future. Saudi clubs continue to show interest in the Portuguese player, should he decide to change career direction come the summer of 2027. Nonetheless, there are currently no signs that Fernandes has lost faith in the United project or is pushing for an exit.

Since his transfer from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, Bruno Fernandes has played 335 official matches for the club, scoring 111 goals and providing 109 assists. He has also lifted the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, remaining a key leader within the team.
