Former Manchester City defender Kyle Walker has revealed that Harry Kane was keen to make the switch to the Manchester club during the summer of 2021. Walker shared that the forward discussed his ambitions with him, noting that Kane wanted to move to the Etihad, but unfortunately, an agreement was never reached.
Kane had been linked with a departure from Tottenham Hotspur for some time, driven by his quest for team silverware. Ultimately, in the summer of 2023, the England captain made a move to Bayern Munich.
In an interview with talkSPORT, Walker, who played alongside Kane at Tottenham and for the national team, elaborated on the failed transfer attempt.
"I think he was at a stage in his career where he wanted to leave and start winning trophies. This was the only blemish on his career. He’s a fantastic player, has picked up numerous individual awards, but hadn’t won anything with the club yet," Walker remarked.
The ex-defender went on to confirm that Kane had indeed discussed a potential transfer with him.
"He said to me, 'I want to move', and was asking me a bit about it. But I think the clubs couldn’t agree," Walker added.
Manchester City made four bids
Following the closure of the 2021 summer transfer window, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Manchester City had actively pursued Kane. According to the Spanish tactician, the club made four offers to Tottenham, all of which were turned down.
At that time, Spurs were not prepared to lose their main striker, and a difference in valuation hampered the negotiations. Kane remained at Tottenham for another two seasons before eventually heading to Germany in 2023.
