Legendary Chelsea captain John Terry has urged manager Xabi Alonso to prioritise defensive organisation in training ahead of a crucial derby against Arsenal. This call for improvement comes after the team conceded three goals in a thrilling yet concerning 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.
The London club has started the Premier League with a perfect record, but the stellar performances of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro in attack were overshadowed by defensive lapses. Chelsea have already let in five goals in their opening two matches, despite the signing of World Cup champion Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa.
On his YouTube channel, Terry stressed the urgent need to work on defensive discipline:
Despite the exciting attacking play, we must look at our defence, and I’m sure the coach will address this in the coming days. Five goals conceded in two matches is really unacceptable. We definitely need to get our act together, and with Martinez coming in, that is bound to happen.
The former defender acknowledged the difficulties Xabi Alonso faces, as the Spanish manager has had little time to work on a consistent defensive line due to players being away at the World Cup.
Coming up for the team is a tough away test against reigning champions Arsenal. Terry described the Gunners as the main contenders for the title and warned that any defensive slackness will be ruthlessly punished:
There’s a huge away match coming up against the champions—Arsenal. This is a monumental game and a massive test. The manager has the time and space over these next five days to work on our defensive play. Arsenal proved last season and at the start of this one that they have a potent attack. For me, they are the main favourites for the Premier League, so this game is going to be incredibly tough.
